Yuan Qi, born in an artist family, began her viola studies with her father at the age of 7, and later with Changhai Wang at the Central Conservatory of Music, and with Ettore Causa at Yale School of Music. Furthermore, Yuan attended several masterclasses by Nobuko Imai, John Holloway, Pierre Henri Xuereb, Doris Lederer, and Joe Krosnick.
In chamber music, Yuan Qi is a dedicated performer whose passionate artistry has been heard and embraced by many music academies and festivals including Seiji Ozawa Music Academy (Orchestra 2009, 2011, 2012), Seiji Ozawa International Chamber Music Festival in Okushiga Japan (2011, 2012), Kneisel Hall Chamber Music Festival (2013), Norfolk Chamber Music Chamber Music Festival (2014), Gstaad Academy of Menuhin Festival (2015). A former member of Jana Quartet , Yuan makes frequent appearances at chamber music societies and festivals throughout Japan and China. This series of performances got recognized and highly praised by local TVs and newspapers. In September 2012, Jana Quartet particpated in the ARD international Competition.
Highlights include a solo performance as a first prize winner of the concerto competition with the Shenandoah University Orchestra. Currently, she is pursuing her graduate performance degree at the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University under C.J. Chang.
