Centennial celebrations
As background, 2022 is the 100th anniversary of two important events in Hugo Kauder’s life. First is the premiere of his First Symphony, played to a lengthy standing ovation in Vienna, praised in a review by fellow composer Paul Pisk, and then, sadly never heard again. The other is his participation in the inaugural gathering, in Salzburg, Austria, of what would become the International Society of Contemporary Music, with such great renowned composers as Paul Hindemith, Anton Webern, Karl Weigl, and Ethel Smyth.
On Thursday October 27, our friends at YIVO in NYC will present an evening of Kauder works including his 1916 Sonata for Violin and Piano that was the basis for Kauder’s first Symphony, and a selection of his beautiful vocal works performed by Vira Slywotsky. We are grateful to YIVO’s Public Programs Coordinator Alex Weiser for crafting the evening’s lively program. Tickets are available here. As a preface to the concert, Alex will be joined by Kauder's biographer, scholar and pianist Karin Wagner, for a conversation about Kauder, his work, and his legacy. A video of this book talk will be available for online viewing on October 20th.
The First Symphony will have its American premiere, played by The Orchestra NOW with Leon Botstein conducting. Performances take place at the Fisher Center at Bard College on October 29/30, and at Carnegie Hall on November 3rd. The whole program is focused on composers who are part of the Recovered Voices movement. Tickets can already be purchased here (for Bard), and go on sale August 30 (for Carnegie Hall here).
